Two new champions claimed major titles in China on October 18. Poland’s Maja Chwalinska won the Wuhan Open, while Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina took home the Shanghai Masters trophy. In Wuhan, Chwalinska came back from a set down to defeat Britain’s Sonay Kartal 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, earning her first WTA Tour title at a WTA 1000 event. She also beat fellow Polish player Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. Kartal had a memorable week of her own, reaching the final in just her third tournament back after six months away with an injury. Her wins included victories over Belinda Bencic, Elina Svitolina and Jelena Ostapenko.

In Shanghai, Davidovich Fokina also recovered from a slow start, beating fellow Spaniard Rafael Jodar 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. It was his first ATP Masters 1000 title and made him the first Spanish singles champion in the tournament’s history. His path to the trophy included saving a match point against Frances Tiafoe and coming from behind to beat Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. For 20-year-old Jodar, reaching his first Masters 1000 final was another step forward. He defeated Daniil Medvedev in straight sets to earn his place in the championship match.

Back here in San Diego, our fall junior classes and clinics continue at Point Loma and Clairemont, with groups for different ages and experience levels. Younger beginners can get comfortable with the racket and ball, while players with more experience can work on their strokes, footwork and longer rallies. Classes give kids regular time on court, guidance from a coach and a chance to practice with other players. If you’re looking for a starting point or a class to help your child keep improving, email info@sandiegotenniscenter.com. We can help you find the right group.
